5 Things that Transformed My Life in Recovery
I’ve experienced many ups and downs in my life & with my health. From cancer five times, multiple surgeries, food addiction, alcohol and drug addiction, depression and anxiety. Even through all of this there are Five Simple Steps I've always come back to that have helped Transform my Life. It's helped me heal and treat my body with love and compassion. Our wellness/self-care can be confusing or even complicated at times, but when we get down to the nitty-gritty it doesn’t have to be. The basic principles are pretty simple.

Number One… Act From a Place of Self-Love and Self-Care!
Self-Love and Self-Care is the foundation we need to lay down first, so that all other aspects in our life can stay in place. It’s the one area in our life that gets pushed to the side. We become too busy taking care of everyone else that we forget to take care of ourselves. Without self-love and self-care everything starts to fall apart.

If we are not acting from a place of self-love, we are acting from a place of fear, or ego. Instead of doing things out of love, we do things because we think we have too. Or, we should do them even when we don’t want to. When this happens we start to build up resentment towards others. The feeling is impossible to maintain. It will eventually take you down!

For example… If you’re trying to change your lifestyle, nutrition, wellness, recovery routine etc… and you’re doing it because you think you have to, and not because you want to… It’s not going to work. You’re forcing the process instead of approaching it through love. Loving yourself and your body enough to want to make those changes and do the things that will make you feel amazing.

When you respect yourself you want to treat yourself with compassion and kindness. You want to let go of ego and release any fear you’re holding onto. Forget the self-sabotage!
To get a jump-start on your self-love revolution, you can put sticky notes around your house that says “I Love Myself”. Every time you see it… read it out loud… and repeat it. Start to create subtle shifts around the way you think and feel about yourself. Choose any affirmation that resonates with you.

Number 2… Eat Real Food
Once I finally started to take my wellness and nutrition more serious, I really started to pay attention to what I was eating. Eating fresh, whole foods has allowed me to feel a sense of freedom in my body. My body responds well, I have more energy, and just feel awesome. My body now craves the foods that make me feel incredible. Very different then what I would eat in active addiction. Our bodies are living things that thrive on living foods. They are designed to process and digest foods that come from Mother Nature. Not foods pretending to be foods. Try and ditch the pre-packaged/processed foods and you will reap the benefits… I can assure you!

Number 3… Personal Development
Ok, so I’m that person that has a stack of self-help books next to my bed. Are you?
When I feel stuck, stressed, or have lost my way I always turn to personal development. Personal development has allowed me to stay focused and on track in my life and business, even when things are not going as planned. When things are rolling right along, we lose sight of personal development. Being consistent with it is KEY!!

Number 4… Daily Spiritual and Meditation Practice
Just as I feel that personal development is a must… I feel the same way about my Spiritual Practice. Without my meditation practice and prayer I would be lost. Meditation keeps me focused, present, and balanced. It grounds me. Meditation allows us to tap into our awareness and create space in our minds and brings awareness into our lives. It allows us to let go of ego and fear, and it makes space for healing, stillness, and creativity. When we connect with the present moment we experience far less worry and anxiety and allow space for self-love and self-care.

Number 5… Practicing Gratitude
We all have our own personal struggles. I’ve had plenty over the years, and still deal with my own struggles in my daily life. I set big goals for myself. I’m a dreamer. I think big. I want to help people. I what to serve. Most importantly I practice Gratitude daily and when shit doesn’t go my way, I try and not let it effect my ebb and flow in life. The most important thing is… I have a roof over my head, food in my pantry, my health and well-being, my sobriety and an amazing support system. What more could I ask for?

Don’t sweat the small stuff.
Laugh often. Smile daily. Be grateful.
Don’t complicate things. Remember to breathe.
Make your recovery a priority!
